The Lifetime 90040 is a basic portable basketball hoop designed for children from about 5 years of age and teenagers as well. It’s sturdy and durable, however some users were not satisfied with a few aspects of this hoop.
Pros:
- Decent price
- Sturdy and durable
Cons:
- some complaints about assembly, backboard or adjusting height (see below)
Key specifications:
- Backboard: 44″, polyethylene
- Height: 7.5′-10′ (6″ increments)
Basic Hoop for Starters or Practice
Model 90040 from Lifetime is a decent basic hoop for starters, family play or a backyard practice – due to its height and backboard size it’s suitable for children from approximately 5 years or teenagers.
Assembly, Moving Around and Adjusting Height
While most users described the assembly as “pretty easy”, there were also some who experienced difficulties (there is no text in the instructions, only diagrams). It takes about 1 hour to put together, which is a standard for these entry-level hoops.
Traditionally, the 27-gallon base can been filled with sand or water and the entire system becomes stable and sturdy. (it takes quite a long time to fill it with sand through the small hole so you would probably choose water). And as similar systems, it’s easy to move around using the little wheels – but when filled it becomes a lot more difficult.
The 90040 enables setting the height in 6″ increments, from 7.5 to 10 feet. A single screw is used to accomplish this task and the system works pretty well – however, a few users mentioned in their reviews they did not like it.
Durable but Not For a Serious Play
As with other Lifetime hoops, the quality and durability of the parts is on a solid level. The powder-coated steel pole feels nice and sturdy, the rim uses quality metal as well and there are no signs of deterioration even after a few years of service.
On the other hand, bear in mind the 90040 is a basic hoop, not suitable for a more serious play. The 44″ backboard is made of polyethylene which absorbs part of the impact energy and the ball behaves differently than on glass for example. It also rocks and vibrates, you don’t get such a crisp response like from more expensive models.
Conclusion: Lifetime 90040 is a decent starter basketball hoop – however, we would rather recommend you the Lifetime 1212 model which is very similar but has a slightly better user rating.
