Inexpensive Hoop for Kids
Lifetime 1221 is an inexpensive portable hoop – the height can be set from 7.5 to 10 feet which makes it perfect for approximately 5-12 year old kids. Keep in mind it is not a professional setup, but rather a hoop for fun and light, family oriented play. It won’t handle frequent dunks or heavy abuse, also the polyethylene backboard dampens the bounce a bit – it doesn’t offer that crisp response you get from glass.
For a more serious play or older kids, get rather some more expensive model with a larger backboard, possibly also extended from the pole (here it sits right on the top of the pole so when dunking, you run right into the pole).
But if you just need a decent hoop that won’t ruin your budget (or don’t know whether your kids will love it or quickly lose interest), the 1221 would be an ideal choice.
Solid Build Quality
Now let’s talk about the construction and build quality – customers report the assembly isn’t difficult (similar to putting together IKEA furniture) and takes about an hour. The images in the manual are okay but could have been clearer. And a few users complained about missing or damaged parts in the package.
The height adjustment system
The quality of material is just fine, extending or collapsing the 3-piece metal pole is quite easy and after you fill the 27-gallon base with sand or water, it gets really stable and won’t tip over. Just a note: It takes forever to fill it will it sand through the little hole so you would probably prefer water – just don’t forget to drain it before winter so it doesn’t freeze.
Sturdy, durable and quite easy to move
Due to its height, it’s not that convenient for storage – on the other hand, it’s surprisingly light and quite easy to move around thanks to the little wheels (see the video above).
And as with other Lifetime hoops, the durability is on a very good level – there are no ball marks even after a lot of shooting, the backboard is really sturdy and even after 5 years the entire hoop is holding well.
Conclusion: If you want a quality and inexpensive portable hoop for your kids (age 5-12), the Lifetime 1221 would be a great choice for you. We can definitely recommend it.
But for older kids or more serious use, we would rather recommend you some advanced goal, for example the Lifetime 51550 or Lifetime 1558.
