High Quality Basketball Hoop
You can immediately see the Lifetime 1558 is no toy hoop but a high quality model that is suitable even for a serious play and can sustain dunking and similar “abuse”. And with the height range from 7.5 to 10 feet, it’s recommended for older children (approximately from 7 years), teenagers or even adults.
Assembly – Not Difficult But Takes Some Time
Since 2008 Lifetime improved the assembly instructions a lot – they’re clear and easy to follow now. A few customers also mentioned bad packaging and some missing parts, but it seems the company listened to those complaints and used an additional outer box to protect the package.
It’s not difficult to put this hoop together but still – it’s a much more sophisticated system than those $80 models. You’ll need some tools (a drill, socket wrenches, rubber mallet) and the assembly takes a few hours – it’s manageable alone but for some steps it’s better to ask a friend for help.
Stable + Height is Easy to Adjust
But after you put it together and fill the 35-gallon base with sand or water, you get a hoop that’s really solid and stable. On the other hand it also becomes quite hard to move, so it’s a good idea to place it at the desired location first and fill it afterwards.
If you use sand, make sure it is perfectly dry, otherwise it would be a nightmare to fill the base through the small hole. And when using water, don’t forget to check its level occasionally. Even though that’s rare, a small leak can develop in the base – and suddenly it becomes unstable without you even knowing it.
The 1558 uses an interesting height adjustment system – it can be easily operated using just one hand and even by the kids themselves (see the video above). As you can observe in the reviews, users really love this feature.
Sturdy, Durable and with Great Backboard
Now let’s talk a bit about the build quality of the 1558. All the parts are really sturdy and also durable – after 2 years everything is still in excellent shape, even after lots of playing, extreme temperature and weather conditions.
And besides the height adjustment system, users are also impressed by the backboard – it is quite thin but much more solid (and bigger) than the backboards used in cheaper hoop system. The acrylic-type material (in combination with the quality, solid-steel rim) provides very realistic backboard action and thanks to its size, the ball doesn’t end up in neighbors’ garden too often 🙂
Conclusion: If you are looking for a high quality hoop for older children, teenagers or even adults, the Lifetime 1558 would be a perfect choice – not overly expensive and suitable both for family and serious play. We can definitely recommend it.
But if you just need a simple hoop for fun and basketball learning, there are cheaper models that would be completely sufficient for that task.
